Ms. Margaine returns to the role of Carmen at the Teatro di San Carlo, opening July 7 with additional performances on July 9, 12, 14 and 16. This Daniele Finzi Pasca-directed production premiered in the 2015/2016 season, with Ms. Margaine in the title role. This season, she sings alongside Stefano Secco as Don José, Erwin Schrott as Escamillo, and Jessica Nuccio as Micaëla, with Juraj Valčuha leading from the pit. Ms. Margaine premiered as Carmen in 2012 at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and has since made it her signature role, performing the role around the world at The Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Opera Australia, Washington National Opera, and the Bayerische Staatsoper. When performing the role at the Canadian Opera Company, Musical Toronto commented, “She has charisma in spades — you can’t take your eyes off her. Her Gypsy is alluring and impetuous, but never crude or vulgar. The voice is gleaming and opulent, with plenty of volume and power, completely even up and down the scale, with no discernible break between head and chest registers.” This Carmen concludes Ms. Margaine’s 2016/2017 season. She begins her 2017/2018 season in Marseille this autumn, where she sings the lead role of Léonore in Donizetti’s La Favorite.
